Ecobee, a Toronto-based tech company, may not receive the same attention as Nest or Honeywell, but it was the first to unveil the app-enabled thermostat. The company’s Smart thermostat product line is funneled through dealers, limiting its ability to gain relevancy in the DIY rink.
Ecobee rolled out the Ecobee3 Smart Thermostat on June 10, 2015. The Ecobee3 includes a temperature sensor that supports the Amazon Alexa, IFTTT and Apple HomeKit.
The Ecobee3 Thermostat may not be on the same level as the Nest Learning Thermostat, but it is highly recommended by consumers and Smart Home enthusiasts.
The difficulty of the installation process will depend on the existing HVAC unit and the installer’s electrical skills. If the existing thermostat utilizes a five-wire system, then the installation process will be a breeze. However, if the thermostat utilizes a 4-wire system, the Common or C wire will need to be installed, in order for the Ecobee3 Thermostat to function properly.
Luckily, Ecobee already thought of this issue, so they included a Power Extender Kit in with the purchase. This device allows installers to skip the Common wire, allowing for a DIY installation. The Power Extender Kit must be connected directly to the HVAC unit’s controller board, so some knowledge on these systems will definitely prove to be valuable. The Nest Learning Thermostat and Honeywell Lyric do not require a C wire.
Once the installation process is complete, Ecobee3 will recognize the connection and lead you through the configuration process. Users will be able to select the Celsius or Fahrenheit scale, add connected devices and pair the included remote sensor. The temperature sensor should be installed in a different room than the thermostat, so it can alert Ecobee3, when the family is at home or away.
Full Color Touchscreen
Instead of radial dials, the Ecobee3 has a beautiful full color touchscreen that displays the preset mode (heat, cool, off and auto), indoor humidity percentage and temperature, temperature adjustment slider and the local forecast.
The embedded motion sensor keeps the thermostat updated on the family location, whether they are home or away. When the Ecobee3 was first released, the touchscreen was lacking in some aspects, but after a few updates it works flawless.
Making temperature-setting adjustments from the app and touchscreen works flawlessly. The Follow Me and Smart Home/Away features definitely intriguing, transforming the thermostat into an adaptable and smart thermostat.
The IFTTT channel, partnerships and third-party compatibilities include Amazon Alexa, Wink, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings and etc.
Even though the Ecobee3 got off on a rocky start, the updates helped to eliminate the glitches that plagued its functionality. For consumers that are considering investing in a Smart thermostat, the Ecobee3 would be a great investment. The Apple HomeKit integration and IFTTT channel makes it very worthwhile.
